DGI Brief - June 10, 2016

Happy Friday to everyone. Today's top 5 news on global issues from #Syria #Afghanistan #Panama #SouthSudan and #GoodStoryFriday from #Iceland

- SYRIA: the al-Hakim pediatric hospital was the only children’s care center in the area. Since 2011, rights groups documented 365 attacks on 259 medical facilities & deaths of 738 health care workers. 90% of those attacks were by Syrian government & its Russian allies. I feel so powerless, so furious… when will they stop?

- AFGHANISTAN: The Afghan National Defense & Security Forces (ANDSF) do not have the capacity – training/equipment/will – to drive the Taliban out of Afghanistan, they can only attempt to somewhat hold the line. ANDSF’s operating budged is 2x the entire federal revenue of Afghanistan. Who pays it then? The US. And that will not be indefinite. But if left to their own device, Afghanistan would plunge into such chaos, flooding the region and the world with millions of refugees & exacerbating the security challenges we already face.

- #GoodStoryFriday: watch the video http://bit.ly/1WIIAqW to see how CO2 injected into volcanic rock transforms into carbonate minerals naturally, offering “ultimate permanent storage”. Science is amazing. #innovation
