Why #ImWithHer

I am truly happy tonight. The United States of America has nominated its first female candidate for president. I feel the power of that. Even though I am a young, educated, professional female who has enjoyed and taken full advantage of my privileges. The shoulders, the backs of women who achieved these opportunities now available to me are long in the past, obscured from my consciousness by countless stories of women’s success. For a moment I am sad that I will never truly know how our grandmothers and mothers must be feeling right now, those who in their lifetime were not allowed to participate in public and civic life. My sadness is fleeting though for I am oh so grateful not having had t

Happy Friday, everyone. Today's top 5 global issues news are about #Turkey's pressure on #Africa, #Argentina and #Mexico, #USA #UK and a #GoodStoryFriday about #cleanenergy - AFRICA: Turkey, like any country in the world, has the right to ask. And like every country in the world, Nigeria & Somalia have the right to decline. Don’t close down schools, please. Don’t restrict education just because some guy thousands of miles away badly wants to be a dictator. You know, President Erdogan & Fetullah Gulen, the alleged coup mastermind, were allies once. And speaking of allies, Erdogan delivered an angry speech today, suggesting the US may have been involved in the attempted coup… - The Latin Ameri

Good morning, all. Today's top 5 global issues news are about #Africa #Syria #LakeChadBasin #Peru and #NorthKorea - AFRICA: This is a significant move by the Rockefeller Foundation – founders of the global oil industry – to move towards renewable energy & divest from fossil fuels. The investment goes to Lekela, a 60/40 pan-African joint venture btw. Actis & Mainstream. The goal is to build a 1.3-GW wind & solar portfolio throughout Africa by 2018. That means developing power grids & energy capture-and-release networks including batteries, thermal energy storage etc. to meet the electricity demands when there’s no wind/sun. Ambitious yet totally doable. Well done! - SYRIA: although some allie

Happy Wednesday, all. Today's top 5 global issues news are about #Colombia #India #Turkey #USA and #SouthSudan - COLOMBIA’s government & rebels of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) agreed the amnesty provision of last month’s peace agreement will not apply to perpetrators of sexual violence. Of the 7.8 million officially registered war victims, nearly half are women. Indigenous & Afro-Colombian groups were particularly targeted. The paramount decision was made possible because a commission on gender issues was set up as part of the 4-yr peace talks & both sides had women representatives at the negotiating table. Not only will victims of rape & sexual violence receive justice,

Today's top 5 global issues #news are about #solarenergy #immigration #conservation #Zikavirus and the #civilwar in #Syria - UAE: The Solar Impulse 2 solar plane landed in Abu Dhabi today, completing its 16-month & 16-stop flight around the world using only solar energy. Clearly, much more research & development will be required before such travel can become commercialized, yet we are on our way. As one of the 2 pilots, Bertrand Piccard (yes, son of undersea explorer Jacques Piccard & grandson of balloonist Auguste Piccard) said: “The future is clean. The future is you. The future is now.” - USA: In an efforts to address the surge in illegal immigration – since October, ov

Good Monday to all. Today's top 5 global issues news look at #Afghanistan #Philippines #Haiti #SouthSudan and the #ArabLeague - AFGHANISTAN: New UN report released over the weekend gives nauseating figures that through June 1,601 civilians were killed, 3,565 wounded & about third of the total casualties were children. It seems these record highs are reached so frequently, it’s almost a trend. What are the counter-insurgency efforts exactly, 10-yrs in? Where do these cowards get their IED & bomb-making materials? There are innovative solutions to mitigate these aspects but no one is willing to try? Please check out the following article from an anti-terrorism & explosive expert: http://bit.ly

Happy Friday to all. Today's top 5 global issues news are about #climatechange #cancer #migration #Iraq and a #GoodStoryFriday about #NewYorkCity - The WORLD Meteorological Organization (WMO) tracked June to be the 14th consecutive month of record heat – both for land & oceans – w/ average temperature 1.3°C warmer than pre-industrial era. Also, levels of green house gas carbon in the earth’s atmosphere reached new highs. In the words of WMO’s David Carlson (I’m capitalizing for effect): “What we’ve seen for the first 6 months of 2016 is really quite ALARMING. We would have thought it would take several years to warm up like this. WE DON’T HAVE AS MUCH TIME AS WE THOUGHT.” - HEALTH: The concl

Good morning, all. Today's top 5 global issues news are about #Turkey #Europe's #economy #Zimbabwe #Russia and #USA - TURKEY: The suspension is partial, however the government is allowed to both partially or entirely suspend “the exercise of fundamental rights and freedoms under Turkish Constitution. That is concerning in a country that already has a poor human rights record. The state of emergency gives President Erdogan worrying new powers to continue his purge & autocracy w/o parliamentary approval. 10,000 people have been arrested & nearly 60,000 civil servants suspended or fired. Meanwhile, Turkey’s foreign & local currency sovereign credit ratings were downgraded to BB/B & BB+/B w/ a n

Happy Wednesday, everyone. Today's top 5 global issues news are about the #UK #Uganda #Israel #Turkey and #Venezuela - UK: PM May is on her first foreign trip meeting with EU’s leaders. She stressed that Britain will not invoke Article 50 of the EU constitution (formal exit request) this year. Understandably everyone needs to prepare. There is no point criticizing both Remain & Leave sides for not having ‘clear objectives’ before they called such a paramount referendum. The key points of this divorce from the EU will likely be Britain’s access to the European single market & EU’s principle of free movement of people – which doesn’t bode well w/ UK’s anti-immigration fears. - UGANDA announced

Good morning, all. Today's top 5 global issues news are about #Iraq #China #Lebanon #Malawi and #Russia #Ukraine - IRAQ: Prime Minister al-Abadi accepted the resignation of Ministers of Interior, Oil, Transport, Housing, Water Resources & Industry. His plan is to appoint technocrats who won’t be sucked into the sectarian power-sharing struggle. That’s a noble aim. Is it possible? Iraq’s Shia cleric Moqtada al-Sadr, among many other things, responded to the minor increase of US troops fighting ISIS by telling his followers those troops “are a target for us”. Very precarious situation. - CHINA is showing its strength in the face of a ruling by an international tribunal that it has no claims ov

Concerns are such wide sweeps indicate lists of names were drawn up long before the coup, suggesting … well, whatever personal opinions or conspiracy theories, Erdogan is definitely tightening his grip on power, moving closer to total autocracy. Good morning, Friday. Today's top 5 global issues news are about #France #UK #Egypt #Turkey and the #GoodStoryFriday about #UNESCO World Heritage List - FRANCE’s President Holland extended the state of emergency, due to end July 26, after a Frenchman of Tunisian origin plowed a truck into crowds of people celebrating Bastille Day at a beachfront promenade. At least 84 dead & 202 injured, many of them critically. The media reports continue to highlight the attacker’s dual citizenship & I wonder if that will shape future anti-immigration rhetoric? There are some 60+ countries (many European) that allow dual citizenship, but just as many don’t. It’s worrisome to imagine a crackdown on this in o

Today's top 5 global issues news are about #Kashmir #Zimbabwe #France #SouthKorea and #Venezuela: - In the minds of most of KASHMIR’s 12 mil people, Burhan Wani, 22, was a folk hero fighting for freedom. He was a social media superstar. The public reaction to his killing surprised India – tens of thousands of people continue to protest & stand up to Indian troops – but at least 31 people lost their lives doing so. They want independence. Or at least autonomy. Good morning, everyone. Today's top 5 global issues news are about #Syria #China #Kenya #Israel and #USA - SYRIA: Fighting is intensifying, the parties to the conflict continue to not see eye-to-eye & now Russia is accusing UN Special Envoy for Syria, Staffan de Mistura, of “shirking his responsibilities” to revive peace talks. I’ve worked with de Mistura – he’s brilliant but not a magician, Russia. Ultimately Russia would have to throw its ally, President al-Assad under the bus in order for negotiations to lead to peace & political transition. But what are the lives of millions of civilians in a game of thrones? - The case brought by the Philippines against CHINA – and TAIWAN who administer

Today's top 5 news on global issues are about #SouthSudan #UK #Israel #Venezuela and #NorthKorea - On the 5th year anniversary of SOUTH SUDAN’s independence, heavy clashes between President Kiir’s forces & Vice President Machar’s loyalists seem to have restarted a civil war – a real power struggle, along ethnic lines, full of war crimes including rape & use of child soldiers. The world’s youngest country, at brink of an economic collapse & now new wave of violence, deserves better. Lock Kiir & Machar in a room & don’t let them out until they figure it out between themselves… - UK: Respect to Andrea Leadsom for pulling out of the race, sparing UK months of campaigning – all

After US put sanctions on Kim Jong-un for human rights violations, North Korea called it an “open declaration of war”. China, North Korea’s ally, is caught in the middle – aware of the threat but opposed to any US military presence fearing the THAAD radars could ‘spy’ on them. But it feels the UK takes the legacy of an unjust war more seriously, a heavy imprint on its collective conscience. I wish we all were more reflective, in particular about the horrors & the toll of wars, avoid them at ALL costs. - SYRIA: welcomed respite, although it’s never been very clear what groups are excluded from cease-fires given Assad’s reg

Good morning, all. Today's top 5 global issues news are about #Iraq #Israel #Thailand #UK and #space #NASA - IRAQ: Baghdad residents are furious at the government’s failure to provide security, they chased Prime Minister al-Abadi from visiting the bomb site with rocks & shoes. The ‘unified plan’ is to help coordinate the army, federal & local police & government-sanctioned Shiite militias who all provide security in Baghdad, manning checkpoints & responding to situations… see the problem here? - ISRAEL: Live bullets in response to stones – yet another hurdle on the way to a peace-negotiating table.
